The Short and Sweet Version
What Piqued My Interest
I’m almost finished reading The Invention of Charlotte Brontë: Her Last Years and the Scandal That Made Her by Graham Watson - it does live up to the reviews. I’ve not been able to put it down.
The book is written in two parts - before Charlotte’s death and afterwards. There’s a lot I didn’t know, especially about her husband and father, and the circus that followed Elizabeth Gaskell’s biography. In many ways, not much has changed! If it had been a term back then, Mrs Gaskell might have been cancelled.
Of course, reading Watson’s book has led me to find my copy of The Life of Charlotte Brontë: Complete Volumes 1 & 2, download an unabridged version of Jane Eyre, the entire works of Mrs Gaskell and the Brontes. This is what I love to do, fall down the rabbit hole. Enough books to keep me busy for a while!
When I lived in Manchester I visited Mrs Gaskell’s house a couple of times.
I started listening to this podcast with Lex Fridman and Kevin Spacey because I was intrigued. I carried on listening because I was hooked.
What I Created
Although I’ve not done any writing, I’ve been consistent with my Voicenotes. I’m now ranked 12 out of 68.5k note takers!
I’ve also been doing a reset in Twos. I archived a lot of old notes that were in an Archive folder. I’ve moved notes and standardised on a handful of folders. I’m also sharing more on my Twos profile, as a result.
This video by Nick Milo made me rethink my use of folders (as a whole, across a range of apps). His methodology of only creating folders you need, and when you need them, resonated.
From the Archives
In February I wrote: something changed last year. And mentioned the lovely
:I’m repeating this quote because it is so relevant.
Midlife is when the universe gently places her hands upon your shoulders, pulls you close, and whispers in your ear: I’m not screwing around. All of this pretending and performing—these coping mechanisms that you’ve developed to protect yourself from feeling inadequate and getting hurt—has to go. Your armor is preventing you from growing into your gifts. I understand that you needed these protections when you were small. I understand that you believed your armor could help you secure all of the things you needed to feel worthy and lovable, but you’re still searching and you’re more lost than ever. Time is growing short. There are unexplored adventures ahead of you. You can’t live the rest of your life worried about what other people think. You were born worthy of love and belonging. Courage and daring are coursing through your veins. You were made to live and love with your whole heart. It’s time to show up and be seen ~ Brené Brown
Best Quote of the Week
Writing is a process in which we discover what lives in us. The writing itself reveals to us what is alive in us. The deepest satisfaction of writing is precisely that it opens up new spaces within us of which we were not aware before we started to write. To write is to embark on a journey whose final destination we do not know. Thus, writing requires a real act of trust. We have to say to ourselves: “I do not yet know what I carry in my heart, but I trust that it will emerge as I write.” Once we dare to “give away” on paper the few thoughts that come to us, we start discovering how much is hidden underneath these thoughts and gradually come in touch with our own riches ~ Henri Nouwen, You Are The Beloved
Review of my Week
Over the past week, you have been involved in a variety of activities, which include taking care of the animals on your farm, particularly the hens and lambs. Chris accompanied you to the farm, where you managed to feed and water the hens, ensuring their wellbeing. Your affection for Dolly's lambs is evident as you noticed their growth and curious nature, reminiscing about Dolly's recovery journey and how you cared for her and her lambs until her passing. Furthermore, you ventured into Ashbourne, accomplished some admin work like invoicing and laundry, and managed to keep up with your passion for publishing online. You've also been engaging with your media consumption, specifically watching 'Designated Survivor' and meticulously updating your publishing activities to stay current with your content creation. Your dedication to personal knowledge management and notetaking is highlighted through the use of various digital tools such as Twos, Obsidian, Voicenotes, aimed at enhancing your workflow and archiving processes.
